Category: accessible Devices
Does anyone have any comparisons of GPS apps for the Iphone? I got Scobler, and it eems pretty accessible, though I can't find out now to configure the GPS to use a walking route instead of a walking route. I also have the free version of Telenav GPS, as well as Scout, which also seem pretty accessible, though i haven't tried them outside yet.
Does anyone have any info on the usability and accessiblity of any GPS iphone apps?
Thanks for any help,
Matthew
have a look at blindcooltech.com, there are a couple podcasts on comparing GPS apps on iDevices. All except Navigon are fairly accurate reviews up to this point as far as I know.
KC8PNL,
Thanks, I've listened to the Blind Cool Tech Podcast.
What happened to Navigon? First it was accessible, then an update broke it, and then it reaccessiblified itsself. is this correct? Do you use an Iphone GPS solution, and if so, which would you reccommend?
I prefer a solution that announces upcoming cross streets, as does Ariadne from what I have seen it do anyway.
The reason for this is that Turn by Turn is more like being led, while announcing of upcoming cross streets is more like being guided.
For the young snooty ubers who never forget anything, some of us find it quite helpful to be able to be alerted of an upcoming street, similar to the way a sighted person may check the sign.
Can't wait to fully use this stuff once I get moved back into the city / have my soul back.
If you'd rather wait until round about fall, I heard that maps is going to be completely revamped with the release of iOS 6. Based on things I've heard when it's been tested, it functions as a damn good GPS system. Probably as good as or better than most of the paid aps that are currently on the market.
That's assuming you have a 4s. Word on the street is that older models of the iPhone will not support Maps. We'll know in another month or so though.
Navigon is once again accessible with iOS 5.1 and later. However, I've been using MotionX GPS lately, as it's a subscription based service at $3 a month. Much cheaper than Navigon, but I would say better in a lot of ways.
According to Apple, turn-by-turn only works on the 4s and the upcomming 5. I have a 4, and unless I upgrade, which will largely depend on the results of other blind users of Maps, that will out of the question for the time being.
